The following are some of the issues surrounding Vegetarianism and Alternative Diets.
Bold terms are topics for those working alone. Those working in pairs should deal with all of the topics.

An extra credit opportunity here would be to provide a meatless snack for the class and explain how they provide needed nutrients to supplement a meatless diet.

- CAFOs
What does CAFOs stand for?
Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.
What are they?
They are a place that often house cows, hogs, chickens and or turkeys. In these places these animals are feed in a small area for up to a year. They also lack vegetation which can cause problems because if the area is not designed correctly it can cause problems with runoff water. Since animals have waste it is easy for it to get into the water which causes environmental problems and health issues. The animal waste can cause fish and other aquatic life to die and cause disease for humans when they drink the water.
Introduction
Farming there are many types of farming in the world and our country but most of the meat produced that we eat is by Industrial farms. These farms tend to use easy quick methods of rasing an killing their animals. Often these methods are unsantiary and disguisting. This rises concerns with the production, process and comsumption of meat. The production creates alot of meat but in order to get alot of meat produced quickly the animals are put in small gross areas and given hormones, antibotics and steriods to help growth and aviod disease. Therefore, the production of meat is alot but the quality isn't the best. Since the production amount is alot it makes the processed part of industrail farms consist of not treating animals correctly and sanitizing correctly. The consumption of meat is affected because the subsides make the products keeper which allow more people to buy them. People are more likely to by cheaper things. I do not think people are truely educated on how their meat is produced and how their animals are being raised.
- farming methods for chickens
Farming methods for chickens are called poultry farms. In these farms. Farmers farm chickens for their eggs and meat. It is said that poultry farming is bad for the environment and can cause health problems. There are many types of poultry farming that have recently been started like free range farming which is environmentally friendly and better for humans health. But, intensive chicken farming causes alot of issues. This is a cheap quick way of farming. With this type of farming a large amount of chickens are kept in a small area. The chickens are routinely treated with antibotics to aviod dieases. They also use steriods and hormones on the chickens. These are the chickens you eat. They have been fed anitbotics, hormones and steriods and you are eating them. For producing eggs the chickens are kept close together in cages were lights are changing to cause the chickens to produce eggs. It is said that the chickens get to much stressed put on them to deliver large amounts of eggs. Because the chickens are very hungry and in a bad enivornment alot of times they result into cannibalism. Therefore the process of debeaking has to occur. This prevents hens from eating each other or themselves. The beaks are removed with a hot blade. Most of the chickens also die of heart or lung failure in their cages sine they are obese from steriods and hormones and chickens have high heart rates in general.

- farming methods for pigs
Like chickens, pigs are keep in stalls together leaving hardly any room for the pigs to move. Also some pigs are keep outside for long period of times in unhealthy conditions. Pigs in general are not suited to be outside 24/7 because their body temperature can't handle the heat and they will get badly sun burned. Pregnant pigs are kept in very poor conditions as well. They are put in small cages where they are stuck in one laying position. They can't even more an inch. In the video you will see how badly the pigs are treated and when they do not grow they are taken by the legs and thrown in order to make longer.

- farming methods for cattle
There horns are chopped off and are branded in order to keep track of the cattle. Also in order to move the cattle farmers use eletrical sticks. In the video you will see how the cattle are badly treated. The cattle are kept in small areas as well and not sanitized correctly. When the cattle are slaughtered the sometimes are not competely died until the end of the process which means some cattle are alive while their bodies are skinned. That occurs because its is the fastest cheapest process. But, like the other two animal types of farming, recently there has been alternative ways of farming the cattle. Like free range and other such farms.

But, all of this effects the enviroment and our health because these farms are not using the best techinques and methods in rasing and killing these animals. Who wants to eat an animal full of steriods, anitbotics and steriods? Well, most of you are when you eat your meat. Mast majority of meat is produced in industrail farming and that takes away from local farming which harms the enviroment because it requires more gasoline which contributes to global warming. Also wildlife places and open areas for animals have been created into places for animals to be farmed. Often deforestation has occured to create farms for animals. Actions like these do not help our enviroment but only hurt it. A big issue with farming anf environmental issues is that the waste that come from the animals have been infected our waters.

Industrial farms need subsides in order to stay in bussiness and these subsides cost the tax payers alot of money ,creating an artifical price and hurts poor farms in other countries because these farmers now can not sell their goods as easy. Although the meat is being produced quick and cheap since it is affecting the enviroment it is costing us more money to take care of and treat the contaminated water. These farmsalso hinder free range farms and other good alterntives because there alternatives are more exspensive to the consumer to buy and like i said before people by cheap things.

These farms also impact the Ethical part of our society becaus the overall treatment of animals. The treatment of these animals are so poor it is beginning to cause an impact on the people. People like me do not want to eat this meat because these animals are being treated so poorly. Not only are we killing animals to be eaten but we are torturing them. They do not even get to live great lives. As soon as they are born they are put into torture and everyday look to their death.
